fair ethics has been founded by the Berlin based art historian and curator Wolf Guenter Thiel and artist Gerhard Bär.
Gerhard Bär and Wolf Guenter Thiel are realizing artistic interventions since the year 2000. Bär develops the concept of the artistic intervention. Thiel works out the art- theoretical and the socio- cultural components and documents them. Together they develop the dramaturgy of communication. The interventions changed the oppinions and attitude of the project partners as well as of their social and cultural interactionfields sustainably. This shift of oppinion were obvious through a change of self-understanding of their own economic, social and cultural actions. Hence it followed that their public relation changed and though this they changed very positively their image in the medias and public. The artistic concept of Bär and Thiel’s artheoretical approach are readable in the tradition of the “soziale Plastik” of Josef Beuys.
fair ethics is a forum for authors, intellectuals and researchers, who publish in the fields of art and comparative cultural sciences. fair ethics presents and discusses thesis, which belong to the overall topic of aesthtetics and ethics. These theories, ideas or scientific results are presented in colloqiums, lectures or workshops. The terminology of ethics hints at humanism and socio-cultural identity, which we express through the term fair ethics. Our main goal is to remarkably improve the lifeconditions of contemporary societies through cultural and artistic interventions and to relate the public to these extraordinary artistic visions and projects.
fair ethics will invite artists to work on topics which follow the identity of fair ethics. The work will be accompanied by a scientific and critical research which will be published and edited.
In opposition to the ideas in arthistory fair ethics does not promote a general change of the world or the prosecution of ideological dogmatic visions, like that of Josef Beuys. Beuys suggested and promoted the change of society as a whole as “Soziale Plastik”. 1917 the Russian Constructivistswanted to change the world through agitationand activism, like many modernists as for example the Futurists. Both wanted direct impact on the consciousness and life condition of people in general. fair ethics does not overestimate ist importance, but also does not underestimate ist possibilities and the necessity for artistic engagement and interventionism.
fair ethics was founded in a house at the Karl Marx Strasse in Berlin Neukölln. This quarter of Berlin is supposed to be one of the mostdisliked hot spots in Berlinor as we learned “it is given up by the police and in the overall public oppinion an absolute no go area”.
Berlin Neukölln ist one of the prototypic quarters, in which new cultural identities are generated. These identities originate in the local colour with it historically grown cultural specialties and in cultural impacts of different world-cultures. Solution scenarios for the so called “Clash of Civilization” are exercised, developed, improved, and established far away from global politics in situations of everyday life. In Berlin Neukölln the modes of understanding inbetween cultures, religions and way of lifes are devloped and established. Hence it follows that sustainable cultural substance and common grounds are generated. This common grounds are the reasons for us to be in Berlin Neukölln.
fair as a meaningful terminology has remarkably lost importance in the social consciousness. Beside „fair play“, „fair trade“, „fair use“ and the Fair-show-business the terminology is vanishing. To be fair is not a prestigious value anymore, because the single person feels treated unfair all the time. The single person feels treated unfair, by the state, by the society and by the overall life-conditions. Fairness is not only an ethical and aesthetical attitude, but the base for every economic, social and cultural acting, if it should be sustainable.
We believe the big tasks for the world can only be answered by beeing fair in each and every question of being together. As long as ecology is just economized, but the ethical convictions of the social elites have not changed, finally nothing can be changed. This is due to all social tasks.
The context of art and aesthetics and ethics has got out of any focus. Thereby we do not hint at the humane integrity and social competence alone, but also at the traditional selfunderstanding of an artist in relation to his art production and the integrity of this production. The term represents ethics of art production. The ethics of artist and the resulting artworks could be a great example for parts of the society and its elites to refigure the terms fair and ethics.
